MATCH PREVIEW | Scholars play final game of 2026 this Wednesday

The conclusion of the Under-16s Scholarship season sees Leeds Rhinos take on St Helens at Ruskin Drive on Wednesday night, kick-off 7.30pm.

With one big win already against a Lancashire opponent earlier this season, Simon Brown's side have the opportunity to test themselves again with a trip to Saints after a disappointing loss last time out. Noah Sheriffe, Joe Gill and Laike Smith were all try scorers but Castleford Tigers proved too strong as a strong second half saw the Tigers blow out the scoreline with a 40-16 result. It is the fourth loss the Rhinos have conceded in 2026 after losses to Hull, Leigh and Huddersfield back in March and April.

Gill remains the side's top try scorer with five tries to his name so far in 2026, whilst Sheriffe has also combined his try-scoring threat with an eye for goal as he's got 38 points in five matches. Bamidele Olasode has been a stellar pickup late in the campaign as he made a starting appearance against Castleford after scoring twice against Wigan on his first Scholarship appearance. The Cas game also saw Deacon Ellam make his Scholarship bow, as almost all of the new Under-15s have now had the opportunity for minutes in 2026.

Wednesday night's opponents St Helens have been one of the leading Scholarship programmes in 2026 as they have enjoyed an unbeaten season so far.

Starting back in March with an 18-all draw against Wigan Warriors, Saints have since gone on to record six consecutive wins against opponents since the start of April and hope to finish the year with a seventh successive victory when the Rhinos arrive at Ruskin Drive. After back-to-back 40+ point wins over Bradford and Leigh, the Saints managed to fend off Warrington in a 36-28 final score, before resuming normal service with a 66-6 win over the Leopards and a 52-6 result against Hull KR.

Last time out, they edged past Hull FC 30-28 at the University of Hull, but now look to end a winless streak against Leeds that dates back to the start of the 2022 season.
